August 26, 2007 (Nako, Hangrang Valley)
Tibetan Volunteers for Animals (TVA) team from Dharamsala, with two other volunteers visited Nako village (situated at an altitude of about 12000 ft.) at Kinnaur District in Himachal Pradesh, about 500 kilometers from Dharamsala, to promote Vegetarianism amongst the people of Himalayan region.
The campaign was organized during the teaching and initiation by His Holiness the Dalai Lama from 22nd to 26th August 2007 with photo-exhibition and distribution of leaflets, audio and video CDs etc. TVA team also pasted many different posters quoted “Kill not the Animals but kill the Animal inside You!” and also stickers mentioned “Go Vegetarian, Save Animals” all around the teaching ground and main market, especially targeting non-vegetarian restaurants.
People of Kinnaur and Spiti appreciated the noble work of promoting vegetarianism and urged TVA to continue the work.
TVA came in good terms with Kinnaurian because of their sun-baking hard work for Animal Rights and promoting Vegetarianism at this remote area where hardly any one would think of visiting.
One of the Indian visitors expressed his disappointment by the fact that still many Buddhist monasteries in India serve meat.
A local Kinnaurian woman, around 45 years of age, mentioned that she was pleased with TVA’s work but said with guilt that it is hard to give up consuming meat in the Himalayan region. However, she promised to reduce consuming meat and to stop completely in the near future.
TVA team thank Mr. Sonam Choephel of Dharamsala, Miss Dhondup Lhamo of Shimla and Mr. Thupten (ex-Sarah) from Hang Village of Kinnour for their kind support.
